Gold Team Jerseys in the NHL   Leave a comment

The Nashville Predators don the golden jerseys when they play at home.  Gold although is very similar to yellow. I don’t like the colour yellow.  But c’est la vie. Let them enjoy the yellow uniforms.

The Predators are not the first NHL team to wear gold/yellow team jerseys.  Going way back, circa 1970, the Los Angeles Kings, Oakland Seals and later the Boston Bruins and Pittsburgh Penguins  also wore the gold.  The uniforms below:

Even the pants were gold.

The Oakland Seals went through many uniform variations as the photos above show.  They even had white, and later on green and gold skates at various times.

Pope Francis Canonizes Single Turkey In Annual Vatican Tradition

VATICAN CITY—Declaring the 10-pound bird worthy of the church’s veneration to a crowd of thousands in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Francis celebrated a hallowed tradition on Thursday by canonizing a turkey from a local farm, a Thanksgiving ritual dating back more than three centuries to the pontificate of Innocent XII. “Dear brothers and sisters, it is my deepest joy today to present the life and witness of this humble bird to the Church and welcome him to cluck and cackle among the saints in God’s Kingdom of Heaven,” Pope Francis recited in accordance with the teaching of the Second Vatican Council, invoking the name of God three times before inscribing the newly beatified bird, named St. Gobbler, in the catalogue of saints. “Like those who came before, this pure and simple bird lived a life in consecration of Christ the Lord, his gentle gobbles spreading goodness and grace throughout Applewood Farms. May this noble and dignified bird forever bear witness to the Glory of God on earth and shine light in the hearts of the faithful on this most holy day.” Vatican sources say the ceremony was far less controversial than last year’s posthumous canonization of St. Wattle, a 23-pound wild turkey who was burned alive as a heretic in 1690.

Movies with Ghost in the title   1 comment

People are both scared and intrigued by ghosts.  Suffice it to say ghosts are very popular with the general public.  They are frightening, yet they allow belief in the afterlife. The idea of ghosts has been around since time immemorial.

The belief in manifestations of the spirits of the dead is widespread, dating back to animism or ancestor worship in pre-literate cultures. Certain religious practices—funeral rites, exorcisms, and some practices of spiritualism and ritual magic—are specifically designed to rest the spirits of the dead. Ghosts are generally described as solitary essences that haunt particular locations, objects, or people they were associated with in life, though stories of phantom armies, ghost trains, phantom ships, and even ghost animals have also been recounted.

With the advent of film the ghost story had a new platform that made the popular genre more accessible. There are many ghost movies. Below are a few, many others are out there.

China sends warplanes to newly declared air zone   Leave a comment

China has sent warplanes to its newly declared air defence zone in the East China Sea, state media reports.

The vast zone, announced last week, covers territory claimed by China, Japan, Taiwan and South Korea.

China has said all planes transiting the zone must file flight plans and identify themselves, or face “defensive emergency measures”.

But Japan, South Korea and the US have all since flown military aircraft through the area.

China’s state news agency Xinhua quoted an air force colonel as saying the the warplanes had carried out routine patrols to strengthen the monitoring of targets in the zone.

The zone includes islands known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, which are claimed by Japan, China and Taiwan.

Japan controls the islands, which have been the focus of a bitter and long-running dispute between Japan and China.

The zone also covers a submerged rock that South Korea says forms part of its territory.

China’s move has been condemned by the US and Japan.

America, which called the move a “destabilising attempt to alter the status quo in the region”, flew two unarmed B-52 bombers through the zone unannounced on Tuesday.

South Korea’s military said one of their planes also entered the zone on Tuesday.

On Thursday, Japan said its aircraft had conducted routine “surveillance activity” over the East China Sea zone.
