What appear to be tiny oases nurturing a variety of trees in a vast pink desert are not, actually. The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter captured this image in April of 2008 near Mars’ North Pole. Experts believe the dark spots are wet patches of Martian sand that grew from melting carbon dioxide ice due to the spring Sun. In close up views of the image sand slides are evident from swirling clouds of dust.

A solar corona appears over Ama Dablam, a famous Himalayan mountain peak. A corona, one of the few quantum color effects visible to the naked eye, can occur when the sun (or moon) is observed through thin clouds. The light of the sun is separated into wavelengths by water droplets in the atmosphere creating the colorful rings.

Auroras, also known as northern lights, form when particles from the Sun enter Earth’s magnetosphere, releasing charged particles into Earth’s magnetic field. These particles strike atoms creating a colorful light show. The auroral glow takes place high in the atmosphere and clouds lie below. This image reveals clearly the respective layers in breath-taking manner.

The Veil Nebula, in the constellation Cygnus, is one of the most massive and brilliant features in the x-ray sky. The supernova that created this spectacular cosmic scene exploded many thousands of years ago. This small section, captured by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, is in a region known as the Witch’s Broom Nebula.

The navigation camera on Rosetta captured this image of Comet 67P\Churyumov-Gerasimenko tumbling through space with gases escaping the larger lobe with an unnatural glow.

New Barbie Dolls available in ‘curvy, tall and petite’ sizes   Leave a comment

Barbie, the iconic plastic toy doll model, is getting three new body types this year.

The US company behind the famous toy, Mattel, is adding “tall, curvy and petite” body shapes to its line-up of the fashion dolls.

Several skin tones, eye colours and hair styles will also be added to the collection, the company said.

Barbie’s figure has come under fire for years, with critics arguing it set an unrealistic body image for girls.  With the new body shapes, the toy makers say they are “offering girls choices that are more reflective of the world they see today”.

Last year, the company introduced 23 new dolls to its so-called Fashionistas line with varied skin and hair colours, and a much touted flat foot – replacing Barbie’s signature heels.

With this year’s update, the Barbie Fashionistas line will feature:

  • 33 new dolls
  • 30 hair colours
  • 24 hairstyles
  • 22 eye colours
  • 14 face shapes
  • 7 skin tones
  • 4 body shapes – original, plus tall, curvy and petite

Abe Vigoda Dies, hopefully for the Last Time   1 comment

Abraham Charles “AbeVigoda; (February 24, 1921 – January 26, 2016) was an American actor. He was known for a number of roles, especially his portrayals of Salvatore Tessio in the Francis Ford Coppola film The Godfather and Detective Sgt. Phil Fish on the ABC sitcom Barney Miller from 1975 to 1977 and its spinoff show Fish from 1977 to 1978.

In 1982 People magazine mistakenly referred to Vigoda as dead. At the time, Vigoda, age 60, was performing in a stage play in Calgary. He took the mistake with good humor, posing for a photograph published in Variety in which he was sitting up in a coffin, holding the erroneous issue of People. Jeff Jarvis, a People employee at the time, said that the magazine’s editors were known for “messing up” stories, and one of them repeatedly inserted the phrase “the late” in reference to Vigoda, even after a researcher correctly removed it. The edited (erroneous) version was what went to print.

The same mistake was made in 1987 when a reporter for television station WWOR, Channel 9 in Secaucus, New Jersey, mistakenly referred to him as “the late Abe Vigoda”. She realized and corrected her mistake the next day.

Vigoda had been the subject of many running gags pertaining to the mistaken reports of his death. In 1997, Vigoda appeared in the film Good Burger as the character Otis, a restaurant’s French fry man. Several jokes were made about his advanced age, including his character Otis saying “I should’ve died years ago.” That same year he was shopping at Bloomingdale’s in Manhattan when the salesman remarked, “You look like Abe Vigoda. But you can’t be Abe Vigoda because he’s dead.” A Late Night with David Letterman skit showed Letterman trying to summon Vigoda’s ghost, but Vigoda walked in and declared, “I’m not dead yet, you pinhead!” At a New York Friars Club roast of Rob Reiner which Vigoda attended, comedian Billy Crystal wise-cracked, “I have nothing to say about Abe. I was always taught to speak well of the dead.”

In May 2001, a website was mounted with only one purpose: to report whether Vigoda was dead or alive. In 2005, a “tongue-in-cheek” Firefox extension was released with the sole purpose of telling the browser user Vigoda’s status.

Continuing with the gag, Vigoda appeared frequently to make fun of his status on the television show Late Night with Conan O’Brien, including a guest appearance on the show’s final episode. In the 1998 New York Friars Club roast of Drew Carey, with Vigoda in the audience, comedian Jeff Ross joked, “my one regret is that Abe Vigoda isn’t alive to see this”. He followed that with “Drew, you’re a big gambler, what’s the Over–under on Abe Vigoda?”

Australia terror accused discussed ‘kangaroo bomb’   Leave a comment

BBC

What are these fools going to scheme up next? From shoe bombs, to underwear bombs, and now ‘Kangaroo Bombs’.  The terrorists in Iraq stuffed dead animals with explosives and placed them on the side of the road. Detonated the animal corpse when Allied vehicles drove by.

But lets leave the “Roos” alone you imbeciles.  In the name of a Jumpin Jehovah surely there isn’t a mob of virgin kangaroos up in Allah’s heaven waiting for ‘Boomer’ martyrs?

Sevdet Ramadan Besim has pleaded not guilty to terror charges

aaline

An Australian teenager allegedly discussed packing a kangaroo with explosives, painting it with an Islamic State symbol and setting it on police.

Sevdet Ramadan Besim, 19, was committed to trial on Thursday after pleading not guilty to four terror charges in a Melbourne court.

He is accused of plotting to run down and behead a police officer in Melbourne on Anzac Day.

Mr Besim was one of five teens arrested in police raids in April last year. Prosecutors alleged on Thursday that he was communicating with a teenager overseas about his planned attack.

“I’d love to take out some cops,” Besim allegedly wrote.  “I was gonna meet with them then take some heads ahaha.”

The Australian Broadcasting Corp. quoted a document presented by prosecutors that summarised the alleged conversation about the kangaroo bomb.

“The conversation continues with BESIM detailing what he did that day and they have a general discussion around animals and wildlife in Australia including a suggestion that a kangaroo could be packed with C4 explosive, painted with the IS symbol and set loose on police officers,” the document reportedly said.

Anzac Day, held on 25 April each year, commemorates Australian and New Zealand personnel killed in conflicts.

Mr Besim allegedly conducted internet searches on Anzac Day in preparation for a terrorist attack.

Winnipeg Photos: The Forks Skating Trail and More…   Leave a comment

The Forks skating trail opened last week. One of the latest starts ever for the trail. The warm temps in December caused the open water on the rivers.  Only the Red River section of the trail is open. The Assiniboine River section is still too wet, see pics below.

The ‘Banned Trailer’ from The Exorcist   Leave a comment

aaline

In my humble opinion the The Exorcist is the most frightening horror movie ever made.  Nothing ever created before or since contains the chilling notions and graphic images put forward in that film.  The Hellraiser movies get honourable mention.

The Exorcist will scare the meanest, nastiest and badest hombres out there.

aaline

exorcist_jpg_crop_upscale_q85

aaline

William Friedkin’s 1973 masterpiece, The Exorcist, was a landmark in horror cinema, a cultural phenomenon, and (if adjusting for inflation) the ninth highest-grossing film of all time.

The film makes minimal use of music—a stylistic choice which gives the film an air of stark realism despite the supernatural events depicted onscreen. Of the minimal music used in the film, most famous is Mike Oldfield’s “Tubular Bells,” which went on to become a smash so huge that it essentially birthed the Virgin empire.

Before Friedkin settled on Oldfield’s prog masterpiece, he had originally commissioned a score from Lalo Schifrin, who had famously done soundtrack work for Cool Hand Luke, Dirty Harry, and the instantly recognizable Mission Impossible TV show theme.

Schifrin’s atonal Exorcist score was very much in the vein of Krzysztof Penderecki (whose “Cello Concerto No. 1” of Polymorphia was used in the film’s final edit) with the addition of Bernard Herrmann-esque “fright stabs.”

This score was used in an advanced trailer which some have called the “banned trailer.” As the stories go, this trailer literally made audiences sick when it was shown. It’s unclear if the sounds and images were simply upsetting or if the flashing images actually caused seizures in some viewers.

Below the banned trailer and a short film showing audience reaction to the movie.

Pam Am Airlines Morphs into Pam Am Railways   Leave a comment

aaline

Pan American World Airways, known from its founding until 1950 as Pan American Airways and commonly known as Pan Am, was the principal and largest international air carrier in the United States from 1927 until its collapse on December 4, 1991.

aaline

apan

aaline

The first Gulf War triggered by the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait on August 2, 1990, sent fuel prices skyrocketing, which severely depressed global economic activity. This in turn caused a sharp contraction of worldwide air travel demand, plunging once profitable operations, including Pan Am’s prime transatlantic routes, into steep losses. These unforeseen events constituted a further major blow to Pan Am, which was still reeling from the 1988 Lockerbie disaster.

Pan Am was forced to declare bankruptcy on January 8, 1991. Delta Air Lines purchased the remaining profitable assets of Pan Am, including its remaining European routes and Frankfurt mini hub, the Shuttle operation, 45 jets, and the Pan Am Worldport at John F. Kennedy Airport, for $416 million. Delta also injected $100 million becoming a 45 percent owner of a reorganized but smaller Pan Am serving the Caribbean, Central and South America from a main hub in Miami. The airline’s creditors would hold the other 55 percent.

But the name and logo lives on. From the skies to the rail lines

Pan Am Railways, Inc. (PAR), formerly known as Guilford Rail System (GRS) before March 2006, is an American holding company that owns and operates Class II regional railroads covering northern New England from Mattawamkeag, Maine, to Rotterdam Junction, New York.

Pan Am Railways is headquartered in Iron Horse Park in North Billerica, Massachusetts. It is a subsidiary of Portsmouth, New Hampshire-based Pan Am Systems, formerly known as Guilford Transportation Industries (GTI). Guilford bought the name, colors and logo of Pan American World Airways in 1998.
