Winnipeg Crime Statistics 2016 Final Tally   Leave a comment

Crime in Winnipeg in 2016 did not increase dramatically nor did it decline in any substantial way. Homicides were down from 2015 by one unfortunate soul. The homicide levels have been in a reduce mode the last few years, six years ago 30+ homicides a year were normal. Winnipeg has given up the infamous title of murder capital of Canada. ‘The City of Champions” is now the murder champion belt holder in Canada. Edmonton had 40 homicides this year.

Back in ‘The Peg’ robberies and break and enters were way up. Desperate people doing bold things to get that next twelve pack or meth fix. Overall however it was a good year in terms of Winnipeg breaking its long held reputation as the ‘Detroit of the North’.

India puts Gujarat lions on trial after three people killed   Leave a comment

Officials in India have “arrested” 18 lions as they try to find a man eater suspected of killing three people.

Forest officials in Gujarat state will test the lions’ prints and excrement in an attempt to identify the killer.

The “guilty lion” will be kept in a zoo for life while the others will be released back into the Gir sanctuary, the officials told BBC Hindi.

Six attacks on humans have been reported recently near the sanctuary, the only habitat of the Asiatic lion.

Gujarat’s top forest official, JA Khan, said that the lions had been “arrested” over the past two months and were now being held in separate cages while tests were carried out.

“We think we have pinpointed the guilty lion, but we are still awaiting the results of nine more animals,” he said.

Wildlife expert Ruchi Dave told the BBC that the “tests” involved studying the pug marks and faecal matter of the lions.

“The officials are also studying the animals’ behaviour. Man eating lions usually get aggressive at the sight of a human being,” she said.

Another wildlife expert Revtubha Raizada said the man-eating lion would be caged for the rest of its life, as it was too unsafe to release it back into the wild.

Some experts feel that the thriving lion population in Gir forest is to blame for the “unusual” behaviour by the lions.

Govind Patel, the former chief wildlife warden of Gujarat, told the Indian Express newspaper that Gir could accommodate only 270 lions, forcing some prides to settle outside the boundaries of the sanctuary.

India’s Supreme Court has ruled that Gujarat needed to relocate some of its lions to other states to avoid the possibility of disease or other disaster wiping out the entire population.

However the state has expressed reluctance and has not yet complied with the order.

Six cases of lions attacking humans have been recently reported near the Gir forest

The Asiatic lion (Panthera leo persica), also known as the Indian lion or Persian lion, is a lion subspecies that exists as a single population in India’s Gujarat state. It is listed as Endangered by IUCN due to its small population size. Since 2010, the lion population in the Gir Forest National Park has steadily increased.

In May 2015, the 14th Asiatic Lion Census was conducted over an area of about 20,000 km2 (7,700 sq mi); the lion population was estimated at 523 individuals, comprising 109 adult males, 201 adult females and 213 cubs.

Murders have spiked by 49 percent this year compared to last year, and 81 percent over the same time period in 2014.

With more than 450 murders so far in 2016, Chicago is on pace for its highest overall murder count since at least 2012, when 504 were recorded in the entire year.

Overall shooting incidents — at more than 2,200 and counting — have mirrored that rise, with a 48 percent spike so far in 2016.

Police blame gangs for a disproportionate share of the city’s violent crime.

Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said on Saturday that about 1,400 people — many of them gangs members — are driving 85 percent of the city’s gun violence.

The two suspects in Aldridge’s death are both documented gang members, police said.

Tragically, many of the shooting victims get caught in the crossfire.

Beer thieves raid beer store, one dressed as a hockey goalie   Leave a comment

Only in Canada. The clown is carrying a hockey goalie stick.

Published on Aug 26, 2016

On August 15th at 3:38 a.m., a break-in occurred at a beer store vendor in Russell, Manitoba. Video surveillance caught two men entering the store and stealing cases of beer.

The first man was wearing mitts/gloves, a large coat, ball cap and had his face covered.

The second suspect that followed was dressed as a goalie.

However, he may have been a defenceman or forward in disguise as he was wearing jersey #17 – a non-traditional number for goalies.

He is described as having a medium build, wearing a blocker, trapper and carrying a goalie stick.

Anyone with information about this theft or has played against a goalie matching this description is asked to call Russell RCMP.
