U.S. Supermax prison in Colorado has quite the crew of inmates   18 comments

From Islamic terrorists to New York mafia dons Florence Supermax prison has them all.  And they all sleep on concrete beds.

Officially it is the “Administrative Maximum” facility at the Florence Correctional Complex (FCC). It is the federal Bureau of Prison’s highest security lock-up and is already home to a number of prisoners incarcerated as part of what the US calls its war on terror.

British “shoe bomber” Richard Reid is held there. Omar Abdel-Rahman, jailed for conspiracy after the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center, is also believed to be an inmate.

Ramzi Yousef, also implicated in the 1993 plot, is also behind bars at the institution known for its harsh conditions.

Abdel-Rahman, also known as the blind sheik, has been transferred to a minimum security facility in Butner, North Carolina due to failing health.  He is in the same institution as Bernie Madoff.

The U.S. government uses the abbreviation ADX for the Florence supermax.  ADX stands for Administrative Maximum Security.

Built in 1994 at a cost of about $60m, ADX Florence is said to be equipped with 1,400 remote-controlled steel doors, motion detectors, pressure pads and gun towers with perfect sightlines across the complex.

Tightly controlled and technologically advanced, such facilities are designed for the most dangerous and disruptive prisoners – and have been a source of controversy for many years.

Solitary confinement is an almost permanent way of life, with ADX Florence’s 400-or-so prisoners locked in spartan cells for at least 23 hours each day.

An hour each day can be spent in a concrete-walled recreation yard.

A typical “Supermax” cell’s furniture – bed, desk, stool – is made from poured concrete.

The cells are equipped with showers that run on a timer, and a toilet that shuts off if plugged. Meals are delivered to inmates in their cells to restrict interaction.  Each cell also is equipped for 24-hour video and audio surveillance.

2. Shower works on timer
3. Small black and white TV showing educational programmes (some prisoners only)
4. Heavy duty steel door or grate
5. Writing desk
6. Toilet which shuts off if blocked
7. Sink
8. Steel mirror, rather than smashable glass

Breeding monsters

Supermaxes tend to be the end of the road for those in the prison system.

Transfer to an even marginally less restrictive environment can require several years of good behaviour.

To their supporters, these jails are the most appropriate way to house the worst of the worst in the prison population.

Critics describe them as a breeding ground for monsters – with regimes that are tantamount to torture.

The Canadian equivalent to an American supermax prison is Millhaven in Bath, Ontario. Located on the shore of Lake Ontario southwest of Kingston it houses the “worst of the worst” in the Canadian Federal prison system.

Security at Millhaven.

The perimeter is surrounded by a double 30-foot razor fence, and has observation towers at the corners. There is a 4-foot “warning fence” inside the perimeter of the exercise yard, that acts as a boundary inmates cannot cross without deadly force being used. Armed patrol vehicles with AR-15 rifles and parabolic microphones are on guard 24/7. There are motion sensors in the outlying property, and multiple CCTV units throughout.

Specialized perimeter security patrols are equipped with TOW rockets to guard against extraction from the prisoners yard via helicopter. (This was enacted after such an escape was successful on June 19, 1990 from Kent maximum security in BC.)

Visitors are subject to search once on the property (both person and vehicle) and an ION scanner is used upon entry to detect drugs or other compounds. The visiting area is equipped with CCTV, and listening devices are in each table.

Inmates in the MAU (intake) are allowed only screened visits (behind glass).

  1. Torture. Close it down.

  2. WE BABLY NEED A PRISON OF THIS TYPE IN THE UNITED KINGDOM
IT IS GREAT TO KNOW THAT ISLAMIC TERRORISTS DO NOT GET 76 VIRGINS AND INSTEAD GET LOCKED AWAY
IT MUST HAVE AN INFLUENCE ON POTENTIAL TERRORISTS
THE WHOLE WORLD KNOWS WHAT CAN BE EXPECTED IN A SUPERMAX

GREAT JOBS LADS YOU ARE HELPINH TO KEEP THE WORLD SAFER

    RICHARD WHARTON
  3. I think that we need more prisons in the united states. That will be be a deterrent for inmates killing each other

  4. THESE PRISONS ARE A TOTAL JOKE AND INHUMANE.ANIMALS LIKE MY DOGS GET TREATED BETTER.

    • YOU WOULDN’T FEEL THIS WAY IF YOUR ENTIRE FAMILY AND/OR YOUR KIDS WERE VICTIM TO ONE OF THESE PIECES OF SHIT. WOULD YOU?

    • these prisoners are not even in the same class as dogs, they are scum, monsters. this prison is perfect for people of this caliber

    • Dogs and other innocent animals are worthy of humane treatment. Criminal psychopaths are not. Society shows excessive mercy by letting them live. They are sociopaths, devoid of conscience, and given the opportunity, will keep killing, maiming and causing destruction to achieve their evil ends. We owe a huge debt to the correctional personnel who protect society from these monsters.

  5. It is not the prisons that are a joke but the ill informed who think they are inhumane. If it were not for the bleeding hearts these and others like them would be dead just like their victims. More Prisons? No. They are not worth the time or money. Inmates killing each other… let them do what society is not allowed to do.

    • I DONT CARE HOW ILL INFORMED I AM.IF I WAS LOCKED UP FOR 23 HRS PER DAY I WOULD DEFINATELY HAVE A MENTAL BREAKDOWN OF SOME SORT.PEAPLE NEED PEAPLE AND THATS IT.I GUESS THE PENAL SYSTEM STAFF ACROSS THE WORLD WOULD NOT GET THEIR PAY CHEUQUES IF IT WERE NOT FOR THESE BRAVE CONDEMED SOULS.

  6. well i fill you should give larry hoover the death penality and free jeff fort

  7. The decision to house these worthless monsters under such conditions is an alternative to execution. Atleast they get to eat good palatabl;e food and breath every day to reflect upon the enormity of their crimes. And yes, they deserve the deprivation and isolation and psychological pain as retrinution for the pain they have caused others by murder and torture. I have no sympathy whatsoever for these excuses for human beings. Perhaps a would-be terrorist will think twice before raising a hand against the United States. There are fates worse than death.

  8. If you read the mission statements of a prison, their motive is not punishment, but to provide safe and secure incarceration, safety for all; for the public, for the guards, for other prisoners and for the prisoner himself. That does not mean solitary is humane. I agree with J, Warren and Gabriel. They are all saying the same thing. The prisons are inhumane and tortuous. But some of you are against torture and others for torture. I believe that those who believe anyone deserves torture (despite the crime) prove that we are all the same. We are no better than the murderers kept there who tortured their victims. Only we are worse, because we approve that it can be done legally and that is is desirable. We prove that we are even worse than the inmates because this slow torture is prolonged and that it is deserved. It seems to me at the very least, conditions could be improved for these inmates by building caged walkways where they could at least see and talk to each other, talk to someone. It saddens and disgusts me that someone would approve of extended inhumane treatment for any human being no matter what they have done. If we approve of this treatment to any human being, we prove that deep down we do not value any human being. Even animals past being cured are put down. It would be preferable to execute these tortured inmates and finally confirm that a human life has no value. Carry on.

  9. They should execute all of theses people and then the tax payers won’t have to pay for their sorry asses!!!!!

  10. I can’t imagine losing someone I love to a crime committed by one of these inmates. I think if I got to choose the punishment for these guys I would choose the solitary confinement option. Let them be alone with what they’ve done day after day….hour after hour.

  11. First of all who are we to Judge anyone u people think y’all have all the answer. I don’t care what anyone has to say about my opinion this is wrong
    I

  12. Most of you are dumb fucks. How do you think most of them got their to begin with? greatest upbringing? Sexually and physically preyed upon as kids? You think they just woke up one day and decided to do the things they did? They made a conscious decision to do what they did and they should pay for their crimes. Incarceration is enough, isolation is the same as torture you dumb fucks. The system failed them now it fails them again, how many people go in for minor crimes and come out hardened criminals because of what goes on in jails? you ignorant dumb fucks! If someone is going to be locked up 23 hours a day forever then put them to death and get it over with. Reason why they dont is because corporate America keeps billing you retarded dumb asses to incarcerate them and employ more government payroll people to do so! Either put them to death or treat them humanely, putting them in a supermax or in solitary confinement makes the judges, beuarocrats and anyone that supports putting them there just as bad as the jailbirds themselves. Look at the statistics, 2 million+ in jail closing in on 3 million? How many REALLY belong there? Then 10 million in the army and related support jobs? Is it really needed to start wars to infiltrate corporate america into those countries for that countries natural resources? Printing and inflating of money which means if your great grandfather was a SAVER and he horded a HUGE sum of $1,000 under his matress in 1900 and gave it to you in 2013 you would be able to buy yourself a fucking IPAD you retard..yet in 1900 he would be buying the nicest house on his block with it. You think the youth that are ambitious all have paved road of gold? Corporate America has created an environment where you work for a BIG BOX STORE for $10 an hour with no future. Immigrants came here 50-100 yrs ago made shitty wages still earned a living and bought a home..now?? they get into drugs to get ahead because the system has failed them and largely in part to the printing of money and bloated government spending. before you speak educate yourself you dumb fucks..yeah you.. you know which of you is a DUMB FUCK.
You talk about ignorance? Americans are the most ignorant uneducated nation as a whole, you are a police state..you are not democratic you are socialists, the rights your forefathers fought and died for have slowly been eroded to the point where the masses dont even know whats what.
How many of you know why the US broke off from England? taxes of what equate to a measly 1 to 3 percent..YES ONE TO THREE PERCENT…. how much taxes you pay now to your government so government can bloat itself?
Our forefathers used to walk up the street to political office..now? THEY spend $400 million to go to India and bring a 2,000 person entourage including flying vehicles there.. really? Smarten up and put those who think spending the publics money without regard and burdening future generations with overwhelming debt and no future…put them on trial and in jail.
You wont fight for human rights but you will fight if someone takes your cigarettes or cancels your cabevision…think on that.
Only communists and dictatorial regimes in the past have treated prisoners in this manner of waterboarding and other torture techniques.
If they are guilty of such serious crimes put them to death, but do not treat them inhumanely as long as they are alive as not even a dog is treated in this manner and considered acceptable.
