Chimp is nanny to tiger cub   2 comments

This two year old chimpanzee called Do Do is showing off a motherly instinct to rival even the most maternal of mankind. They were photographed at Samut Prakan Crocodile Farm and Zoo on the outskirts of Bangkok, Thailand. The farm doesn’t just contain crocodiles. Monkeys and tigers also live there, alongside elephants, lions, horses and hippopotamuses. These adorable images reveal the close bond that has formed between chimpanzee and a two month old tiger cub called Aorn.

CF-18’s roaring over downtown Winnipeg   Leave a comment

Two Air Command CF-18’s made a fly over at the Winnipeg Blue Bombers football game on Friday evening.  The jets proceeded to fly over the city coming back for passes over the downtown.  The roar was exhilarating as the Hornets flew by at about 200 meters altitude and I estimate about 400- 500 kms an hour.  I snapped a couple of pictures as the jets tore above Carlton St. headed north.

Considering the number of sorties these Jets fly, and the safety precautions by ground crews, it would have been 500,000 to 1 that a mishap and crash could have occurred.

The Americans by Gordon Sinclair   Leave a comment

I remember when American forces were leaving Iraq after the 1991 Desert Storm war and how they diverted naval forces to Bangladesh which was struggling with massive flooding.  Here were military personnel that were headed home and yet were directed to help a country in distress.  The Americans always help.

Sure they get up to some conniving some of the time.  But that is what a great power does.  But overall they are an altruistic nation.  And don’t kid yourself on that idea.  They always help distressed countries with emergency relief.

They are a land of diverse opinions and views.  But overall they are a righteous people.  And when they get criticized, lets really think why that criticism is warranted.

New Russian jet fighter   1 comment

The T-50 is Russia’s new fifth generation fighter jet.  It is the country’s equivalent to the American F-22 Raptor.  The Russians are always a few years behind the Americans in terms of introducing new technology.  The F-22 was developed 20 years ago and introduced into front line service 5 years ago.  But the Russians eventually catch up.  And they do have some of the best pilots in the world.

Role Stealth multirole fighter
National origin Russia
Manufacturer Sukhoi
First flight 29 January 2010
Introduction 2015 (planned)
Status Test flight / pre-production
Primary user Russian Air Force

French Atomic Bomb Tests   Leave a comment

FRENCH ATOMIC BOMB TESTS – 1968 – FANGATAUFA ATOLL

Canopus was the code name for France’s first two-stage thermonuclear test, conducted on August 24, 1968 at Fangataufa atoll.

In 1966, France was able to use fusion fuel to boost plutonium implosion devices with the Rigel shot. Roger Dautry, a nuclear physicist, was selected by the CEA to lead the development effort to construct a two-stage weapon. France did not have the ability to produce the materials needed for a two-stage thermonuclear device at the time, so 151 tons of heavy water was purchased from Norway and an additional 168 tons from the United States. This heavy water went into nuclear reactors in 1967 to produce tritium needed for the device.

The announcement by France in the late 1960s to test a hydrogen bomb provoked the People’s Republic of China to conduct a full scale hydrogen bomb test of its own on June 17, 1967.

France was to test the new device as part of a 5 shot series conducted at the nuclear testing grounds in French Polynesia. The device weighed three tons and used a lithium deuteride secondary stage with a highly enriched uranium jacket primary.

Fangataufa was selected as the location of the shot due to its isolation in respect to the main base on Mururoa. The device was suspended from a large hydrogen filled balloon. It was detonated at 18:30:00.5 GMT with a 2.6 megaton yield at an altitude of 1800 feet. As a result of the successful detonation, France became the 5th thermonuclear nation.

Nerves of steel up on high   Leave a comment

The CN Tower in Toronto has opened a new attraction this summer, a chance to show you are brave, or in my opinion a chance to just plain show-off and gloat about it to friends by walking around the edge of the tower.

The tower’s new EdgeWalk will allow thrill-seekers to stroll outside on the world-famous tower on a 1.5 metre ledge that rings the main pod 356 metres (1,168 feet) above the ground.

Opening in August, this walk of wobbly knees will send groups of six to eight people out on the ledge where they will walk hands-free while attached to an overhead safety harness.

During the walk, specially trained guides will encourage visitors to push their personal limits, even allowing them to lean out 116 storeys above the city.

Reports say the EdgeWalk will cost $175. While that may be pricey, CN Tower staff say it won’t cost walkers their lives.

“Our facilities and engineering team supervised the EdgeWalk project design and build to ensure that it is both exciting and safe,” said CN Tower chief operating officer Jack Robinson in a news release.

“EdgeWalk is both thrilling and unique and will push visitors to their limits — literally and figuratively,” said Mark Laroche, president and CEO of Canada Lands Company, which owns and operates the CN Tower. The entire EdgeWalk experience will take about 90 minutes, with the walk itself lasting between 20 to 30 minutes.

EdgeWalk tickets went on sale August 1st.

They give you a breathalyzer before the walk.  To make sure you are not under the influence of alcohol.  Well there goes my opportunity, I would not touch this Edgewalk unless I had gulped down at least 10 ounces of Canadian rye whiskey.

Report: Amazon tribe may have fallen victim to drug traffickers   1 comment

The ancient world clashes with the modern.  Indians that have never seen a light bulb or heard radio are discovered and then cocaine traffickers invade their territory.  The yearning for cocaine in the big modern cities indirectly annihilates a prehistoric culture.

CNN

Suspected Peruvian drug traffickers have destroyed a guard post protecting a recently discovered indigenous tribe in Brazil’s Amazon rain forest, the aid group Survival International reports.

Aerial film and still images of the tribe were first shown to the world in February. The Brazilian government’s National Indian Foundation established the guard station near the tribe’s territory along Brazil’s border with Peru to protect the Indians from outsiders.

Survival International said Monday that Brazilian authorities can now find no sign of the tribe.

“We think the Peruvians made the Indians flee. … We are more worried than ever. This situation could be one of the biggest blows we have ever seen in the protection of uncontacted Indians in recent decades. It’s a catastrophe,” Carlos Travassos, the head of Brazil’s isolated Indians department, said in a Survival International statement.

Survival International reports the tribe’s lands are near the Envira River, which Peruvian cocaine smugglers reportedly use as a route into Brazil.

Brazilian authorities report groups of men armed with machine guns and rifles are in the nearby forest, according to the aid group.

Authorities had recovered a drug trafficker’s rucksack with a broken Indian arrow in it, Survival International reported.

“This is extremely distressing news. There is no knowing how many tribal peoples the drug trade has wiped out in the past, but all possible measures should be taken to stop it happening again. The world’s attention should be on these uncontacted Indians, just as it was at the beginning of this year when they were first captured on film,” Survival International Director Stephen Corry said in a statement.

London riots   1 comment

The British band The Clash wrote a song titled Guns Of Brixton back in 1979 when major riots engulfed parts of London.  The riots were so intense some people thought a revolution had gripped England.  Today London is going through more riots.  Nobody seems to be sure as to exactly what has caused these riots.  But they do make one think back to 1979.
